In June the news broke that the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, confirmed that he will leave Doctor Who in the 2013 Christmas Special, just after the 50th Anniversary. Of course we now need a new Doctor. We have been waiting for months for the announcment to come and as of August we finally know, the 12th Doctor is...Peter Capaldi.
Capaldi is best known for his role as the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker on "The Thick of It". He has already had a role in Doctor Who and Torchwood. This may seem strange but Steven Moffat has said that his previous roles, "will serve as a plot point for his debut series" which is definitely the right move.
This decision to choose an older Doctor could make or break the series. Many of the past Doctors like David Tennant and Matt Smith have been younger so I imagine him being like the first Doctor (William Hartnell): grumpy at first but kind at heart.
Personally I think that this is an amazing choice which will be major change in direction for the show but could prove controversial for the modern fans. Irrespective of what everyone thinks I suspect lots of people will tune in to see Peter Capaldi's debut as "The Doctor".
